"what is skateboarding?" spencer, 25, asks philosophically. "it's a little kid finding a piece of wood and some wheels and saying, 'hey, look at this.' maybe that's completely naive, but i've never lost that 'hey, i'm the guy riding this and i'm the one making up the rules.' "
and his rules aren't bound by fear, gravity, the traditions that govern skateboarding — or common sense.
weaving a mixture of gymnastics and parkour into his love for skating, spencer has become a stuntman both on and off the streets. a texas native who attended high school in loveland, spencer has performed stunts in commercials for mountain dew (directed by forest whitaker) and shiseido uno hair gel (where he doubled orlando bloom) and is the subject and star of a television pilot mtv filmed about his life.
despite his risk-taking, the 5-foot-10, 137-pound spencer said he has suffered no worse than a few tweaked ankles over the years. his mellow attitude belies a mind that is spiritual, thoughtful, playfully childish and driven to test and push mental and physical boundaries.
throw in a background in wado kai karate and judo, and it's easy to see why thrasher dubbed him the "mile high skate ninja." that and one crazy flip caught on film.
