* was born in berkeley, calif., but moved to zikron ya’akov, at three weeks old; competed for israel in 2000, reaching the 500m and 1000m k-2 semifinals.
* when the israeli olympic committee cut back his training grant, zur opted to move to california and use his dual citizenship to compete for the u.s.
* qualified for the u.s. olympic team for the first time in september 2003, placing fourth (500m k-1) at the world championships.
* on being the top american male finisher at 2003 worlds, “it felt very good (to qualify), but i have to admit i was a little disappointed not to medal, ” said zur. “i think in the long run it is maybe better, not medaling just motivates me even more now.”
