Rip Curl Cup 2007: Padang-Padang Finals Highlights

In very tricky and dangerous low tide afternoon conditions at Padang-Padang Beach in Bali, dark horse Kane “Dogbite” Faint (yellow) put his years of experience to work to pull into and fight his way out of a couple of throaty barrels that got him the win at the Rip Curl Cup.

Young Ketut “Mega” Yoga Semadhi (red) was pulling out all the stops in the 4-man final, dropping in and able to get super deep with his smaller physique, and even pulled off a massive floater on a solid 10-foot face. Bukit local Made Lapur was essentially surfing in his own backyard, making it look pretty automatic to just drop in and make a couple turns to get set up and then letting the lip cover him up. Wayan “Betet” Merta was having difficulty with waves selection in the final, but is always a threat and could have pulled off a big scoring maneuver at any time.

Round 3 of the 2007 Rip Curl Cup at Padang-Padang was completed in 4-6 foot surf. With the swell showing later then predicted the competition was put on standby until noon when the first sets started to hit.

The Padang-Padang Trial got started at 7:30 with three pre-trial heats to parse down the list of 18 mostly international surfers vying for a spot in Round 1. Some of the names will be familiar to most, such as Liam McNamara, Nathan Fletcher, John John Florence, Kahea Hart, Benji Weatherly, David Cantrell, and Koby Abberton to name a few.

Making it through to Round 1 were Jason Frederico, David Cantrell, John John Florence, Kahea Hart, Komang Dhamanjaya, Agus Sumertayasa, Kamalei Alexander, and Liam McNamara.

Round 2 finished up at with the tide starting to fill back in but the waves still pumping. Surviving the intense competition and the wave itself to make it into the main event were Kane Faint, Made Lapur, Jason Frederico, John John Florence, Pepen Hendrik, Wayan Gantiyasa, Wayan “Betet” Merta, Dedi “Gun” Satriadin, Mustofa Jeksen, Liam McNamara, Made Lana, Kadek Murtika, Miki Sudena, and Kamalei Alexander.

On March 25th the crew and a bunch of eager groms gathered at Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, for the 2nd event of this year’s Indonesian GromSearch Series. In this awesome location amidst the jungle, the sets were a solid 3-4 feet, and the kids were ripping.

The competition was tough but everyone had a blast. Check out the best clips from the event!
