Aerialist is about Dean Potter and his transformation from rock climber into an aerialist- defined as "an acrobat who performs at height". We have been working on Aerialist in one form or another for years. In 2006, we began shooting new action sequences of Dean practicing what he calls the "Three Disciplines"-Free Soloing, High-lining and BASE jumping- to complement years of archival footage. But the story goes back even further.
On January 22, 2002, Jose Pereyra, Dean's dear friend and mentor died while climbing in Mexico. The loss hit Dean at the peak of his speed climbing and alpinism car

On a back-country ski trip, Tom spotted a vertical ice line some kilometers away. A forthnight after Tom, Steinar and I went on an expedition to make our first frist-ascent on vertical ice ever. It was icy, rainy and scared the sh*t out of number one, while camera man Steinar and belay monkey Tom almost froze to death... The line is now called Tiramisu (Ital. Part 1, Rock Climbing Rescue, El Capitan. A drunk climber has fallen and is only being held by the rope around his leg. This is around 10am and the Yosemite rescue team risks their life to save him. They did not know how well the rope was anchored by the drunk climber when the rescuer jumared up.
