http://www.rei.com Brad, an REI Outdoor School instructor, demonstrates in the video how to do a self rescue after your kayak capsizes. After you've done your wet exit (see related video) get hold of your paddle and your boat so the wind doesn't take them away. Get your paddle float, which you stored in an easily accessible place. Put one leg into the submerged cockpit so that you can keep both hands free without your boat getting away from you. Inflate the paddle float and slide its sleeve over the paddle blade and secure it to the paddle shaft with its clips. Now flip your kayak back over by reaching under the water and pulling the far combing towards yourself while pushing on the near-side combing.

http://www.rei.com Katie and Brad, REI Outdoor School instructors, demonstrate a "T" rescue in this video. You've capsized and are out of your kayak. Your partner moves her boat perpendicular to your bow. Swim to the back of your boat and push down on the stern. At the same time, your partner lifts your bow and pulls it onto her deck. She then dumps the water out of it and sets your boat back in the water (right side up). She sets the two boats parallel and facing in opposite directions. While she leans over and stabilizes your kayak, you pull yourself up from the other side. Keep your weight low and spread between the two boats.

How To Do a Wet Exit While Kayaking Video

http://www.rei.com Brad, an REI Outdoor School instructor, shows you how to get out of a capsized kayak in this video. This is called a "wet exit." First, make sure the grab loop of your spray skirt is on the outside of the cockpit combing. So, you're about to go over—take a quick breath before you go under. Let go of the paddle and duck your head by leaning way forward. Now you need to get your spray skirt off. Slap your hands on the sides of the boat then run your hands up the cockpit combing till you get to the grab loop. Grab the loop and extend your arms out, then, using your elbows to brace off the deck, peel back the spray skirt and make sure it's fully released from the cockpit all the way back. Now place your hands on the boat behind your hips, take your knees out of the thigh braces, and push. Your head will come out of the water on one side of the boat—it's kind of like taking off a big pair of plastic pants!

Grab the handle at the stern of the boat with one hand and the underside of the stern by the rudder area with the other. Lift up, using your knees. Point the bow of the boat toward the water, slowly slide the boat into the water, and then lower the stern into the water. To get the boat out of the water follow these steps in reverse.

http://www.rei.com Brad, an REI Outdoor School instructor, demonstrates basic kayak paddle strokes in this video: the forward stroke, turning strokes, and boat-control strokes. For the forward stroke, think about placing your blade in the water and moving past it, rather than pulling the blade through the water. This increases your efficiency. The forward stroke is made up of 3 elements: the windup, the catch, and the unwind. Rotate your torso (the windup), place the blade in the water by your foot (the catch), rotate your torso (the unwind) to move your boat forward, and then take the blade out of the water when your hand reaches your hip.

http://www.rei.com Katie, an REI Outdoor School instructor, shows you how to get in and out of your kayak in this video—both launching from a dock and from a beach. From a dock: keep your center of gravity low, put your feet into the cockpit while holding onto the dock, and slide your feet into the cockpit, then slowly push yourself away from the dock and into the boat. To get out, do the same thing in reverse: Come up to the dock, lean up against it, pull your knees out of the cockpit, slide your legs out, and sit on the dock. To launch from a beach with a partner: Slide boat in so the cockpit's at the edge of the water, step in while your partner holds the back of the boat steady and then pushes your boat out into the water.
