On Febuary 10th, Tyrol Basin, Wisconsin was home to the first Pee Wee Sherman Rail Jam. First off, to even compete in this contest you needed to be 18 & under since Sherman wanted to focus on the up and coming shreds in the Midwest. With that said, you know these kids were mad hungry and going to chuck onto these rails ...a nd huck-foo they did.
With weather in the midwest being less than favorable the last couple weeks with below freezing temps, the idea of a "smooth" contest wasn't seeming to realistic. But when we awoke that day it was sunny. It had warmed up enough to hang out and shred with out any complaints. Each competitor was given a Tall-T jersey replacing the standard bib, with 84 kids registering it got thuggy in the streets of Wisco ... if Wisconsin can get thuggy.
Once registration was done, it was straight to the course for a 45 minute practice. The course consisted of a flat-down-flat bar into the choice of a 15-foot long box or a flat-down bar. From there it was a mini wall of snow with a mail box on top, or you could hit the c-box. Then onto the volcanoe jump ... lots of features to trick on. Practice was followed by a five minute rider meeting, onto the one hour jam session everyone was waiting for. The competition was fierce, real fierce. With so many young bucks chuckin' you either saw carnage or a bangin' move. With Sherman announcing on the mic, and proud parents cheering on there kids the one hour jam session went by quick and the top 20 men, and top five girls were selected for finals for the most aggresive 20 minute jam session Tyrol Basin has ever seen. With 450's on and off and one footed 270's, it was a tough call for the judges, real tough.
Back at Tyrol Basins lodge the award ceremony went down, the lodge was so packed I don't think everyone fit! Sherman was on the mic screaming out the winners and gave them there prizes. After awards Sherman tried to do a product toss inside but the kids went nuts. Josh was cornered by maybe 90 or so kids and it got so crazy he couldn't even move! Before they tore the place down we moved outside where Josh chucked 4 refrigerator sized boxes of gear at the hungry pack of wolves ... I mean kids.
With good music all day, a fun course, tons of competitors, solid judging, and good weather, year one for The Pee Wee Sherman Rail Jam went down smooth and with so much gear from all the sponsors thrown out, everyone went home with something.
