Maryland man appears to be situp champion BEL AIR, Md. (AP) A 19-y ear-old physical fitness buff ended his efforts to break the world record for situps Sunday after completing more than the current record-holder, according to a witness. Despite delays caused by bouts of nausea, MARK PFELTZ, of Middle River, was well past the Sunday morning and ended his quest at p.m., said Mylinda Hunt. 18, PFELTZ's girlfriend and the official observer for his assault on the record at the Scarlet K2rnt? Schcc! hsrc PFELTZ, 19, was trying to eclipse the situp MARK established in May by a California man. August John Hoffman Jr. holds that record, according to the London office of the Guinness Book of World Records. PFELTZ completed situps in the first 35 hours but slowed considerably after becoming ill, said Mike Gilbert, owner of the karate school where PFELTZ began his situps at 4 a m. Friday. By 4 p.m. Sunday "he was really, really out of Gilbert said after talking to PFELTZ by telephone. "He just said he was going to sleep and that's where he was going to stay." PFELTZ initially intended" to complete situps. "I'll do because I want to make sure I beat him PFELTZ said Friday. "I have the determination and the drive to do anything in the world I want." But after suffering from nausea Saturday, PFELTZ" modified his goal to situps, Gilbert said. He became nauseous again Sunday morning. "He was a little nauseous and he had thrown up a few times, but he's still going Gilbert said. PFELTZ had been taking two-minute rests after every situps and a half- hour break "in an Gilbert said. But he changed the number of situps to 500 per set Sunday, Ms. Hunt said. PFELTZ, who vowed "to take a champagne bath when this is said he did more than consecutive situps earlier this year and usually does in his daily workouts. But he modified the champagne bath plan, too, hitting the bed instead, Ms. Hunt said. During the weekend's effort, PFELTZ had next to him containers of oxygen, caridy bars and juices lo keep his energy up, along with creams and powders for his muscles and skin. Early Friday he wore a T-shirt, but by mid-afternoon he was sweating and had taken it off. He maintained a constant patter of jokes with visitors. "People are periodically coming in. They'll do some situps with him or talk to him to keep his spirits Gilbert said.
