Anna, an REI Outdoor School instructor, introduces the basic parts of a compass in this video. The needle on the compass is magnetic and points to magnetic north rather than true north. The orienting lines help you to align the compass. The part that spins which moves the orienting lines is the bezel or the dial of the compass. On the dial you see the index lines; these measure the degrees on the compass. The direction of travel arrow indicates the front of the compass. Below the index lines you'll see the declination scale. A good orienting compass will have a clear base with rulers along the edges.
