Steve, an REI Outdoor School instructor, explains how to transfer a bearing from a compass to a map in this video. The first step is to aim the compass directly at the object. The next step is to align the needle with the orienting arrow. Then hold the compass edge to the landmark on the map. Next align the compass orienting lines with the map orienting lines. At that point a line is defined on the map and you know you are located somewhere on that line.
