The very first Ski World Championships took place in 1931 in the Swiss resort of Murren. Originally the FIS organized these championships on a yearly basis. The event was suspended in 1939 due to the Second World War and when it was reinstated in 1948 it took place every four years. However World Cup titles were awarded every two years based on the results of the Olympic Games until 1982. In 1985, the International Skiing Federation (FIS) decided to organize the event every odd-numbered year. Initially, the entire Championships took place on one single day. The 30th edition, due to take place in Val d'Isère in 2009, will take place over a fortnight. It will be France's third World Cup event following Chamonix in 1937 and 1962.
Val d'Isère is to host a total of 11 events in six different specialities. The world's top male and female skiers will compete in Downhills, Super G, Slaloms, Giant Slaloms, Super Combined and the mixed team Nations Cup events. The skier completing his race is the fastest time will be awarded the title of World Champion in that particular speciality.
